Import Duty Calculator
Find out what it costs to bring a car into Ghana: duty, levies, shipping and clearing, in cedis, before you buy.
This is an estimate. GRA sets the final figure at the port from its own vehicle value database (HDV) and the customs exchange rate on the day. To see GRA's official figure for a VIN, use the ICUMS used-vehicle tax lookup.
How is the duty worked out? +
Customs value (CIF) = car value + shipping + insurance. Import duty is 5–20% of CIF depending on vehicle type, fuel and engine size. Then come the ECOWAS, AU, EXIM and special import levies, the examination fee for used cars and the ICUMS network charge. NHIL, GETFund and VAT are charged on CIF plus duty. Cars older than 10 years also pay an overage penalty.
Which cars can't be imported? +
From 1 October 2026, the Ghana Standards Authority does not allow used vehicles older than 15 years, or flood-damaged, burnt or rebuilt vehicles. Right-hand-drive vehicles are not allowed without a special waiver.
Why is my real duty different? +
GRA does not use your purchase receipt. It values the car from its own database (price when new, less depreciation for age), and the customs exchange rate changes every week. Auction and salvage cars usually pay more than their low price suggests.
